Method 1: Create a new extra credit grade item
Use this method for standalone opportunities (e.g., bonus quiz, participation points).
From your course page, click Grades in the navigation menu.
In the grader report dropdown, select Gradebook setup.
Scroll to the bottom and click Add grade item.
Enter an Item name (e.g., Bonus Points).
Set the Maximum grade (e.g., 5 points).
Under Parent category, check the Extra credit box.
Click Save changes. A plus sign (+) will appear next to the item in the gradebook, indicating it’s extra credit.
Method 2: Convert an existing activity to extra credit
Use this method if you want an existing activity (e.g., quiz, forum) to count as extra credit.
Go to your course’s Gradebook setup.
Find the activity you want to make extra credit.
Click the Edit button (three vertical dots) next to it and select Edit settings.
In the Parent category section, check the Extra credit box.
Click Save changes.
